Day 2. Bloemhof to Augrabies Falls

Day 2 started early. I was awoken by the cold at around 4 am. Tried to get back to sleep but after much tossing and turning eventually got up to make coffee at 5.30. After a quick breakfast we packed, tried to shower, no water, and headed out for Augrabies Falls via Uppington. Another long day behind the wheel, following long straight roads. Maize turned to scrub and then as we approached the Orange River and were greeted by lush green vinyards. It appears that Uppington is the home of the humble raisin and sultana.

Finally after around 9 hours on the road we arrived at Augrabies National Park. The staff were super efficient and we soon had our camp set up. This was followed by G+T. a swim in the pool and a short walk. The camp is plagued by dassies, baboons and flies. Apart from these few animals the camp site is really great after Bloemhof.

From home into the unknown

Day 1 completed. Long drive from

Mtunzini to Bloemhof Dam in the North West Province. Fairly uneventful apart from from a couple of serious G+T's on arrival. So we tested our camping prowess. Nothing broke but my skills at putting a new mantle onto the gas lamp were not good. Bloemhof Dam is the mecca for Carp fishermen and we weren’t disappointed. The dam had several camping anglers seeking the elusive carp. Very different type of angling than what I am used to. The campsite was rustic but the showers worked. After a quick braai we baled into bed and were asleep by eight.

Getting ready for adventure

So now we are getting ready for our around SADC trip. South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique. Shopping done, fridge brought to ensure cold beer, beds acquired and AA visited for travel info.

Planning to leave next week.

Getting close to leaving time now. Camping gear organized and ready for packing. Planning to leave on Tuesday and to spend first night testing our camping skills at Bloemhof Dam. From there we are heading for Augrabies Falls and the Richtersveld National Park. Very exciting
